Rufiji River

The mighty Rufiji river runs through the heart of the reserve. Its many channels and small lakes provide a vital water source for wildlife. Crocodiles are resting on the sandbanks and the Rufiji River is most of the time filled with hippos. Nothing can beat floating along the beautiful Rufiji River, watching wildlife gathering along its bank, while you listen to the sounds of hippo grunting.

Elephants and lions

The abundance of wildlife in Selous is exceptional. Elephants, lions and buffaloes are found in no greater numbers year-round anywhere in the world. There are also plentiful crocodiles, hippos, monkeys, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and giraffes. The lakes and waterholes on the main circuit are a great place to view giraffes, waterbucks, zebras, impalas and buffaloes.

Wild dogs

Selous is one of the few destinations in Africa where you can see the endangered black rhino and one of Africa’s largest population of wild dogs.   If you are a bird lover you should visit the lagoons, islands, River Rufiji, channels as well as sandbanks.
