Ngorongoro Crater Safari Guide
Ngorongoro Crater is a vast volcanic caldera with rich grassland, woodland, wetlands and reliable water. The crater floor supports a high concentration of wildlife in a spectacular natural setting.
Wildlife and scenery
Visitors may see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, hyenas and large herds of zebra and wildebeest. With patience and a skilled guide, the crater can also offer a chance to look for black rhino.
When to visit
The crater is open year-round. June to October is dry and comfortable, while January to March brings green scenery and excellent photography.
Planning advice
Most visitors explore the crater as part of a northern circuit with Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. An early descent helps you enjoy the wildlife before the busiest hours.
